When I made the wish, I just wanted a do-over. Another chance to make things right. I never, in a million years, thought it might actually come true... Sixteen-year-old Ellison Sparks is having a serious case of the Mondays. She gets a ticket for running a red light, she manages to take the world’s worst school picture, she bombs softball try-outs and her class election speech (note to self: never trust a cheerleader when she swears there are no nuts in her bake-sale banana bread), and to top it all off, Tristan, her gorgeous rocker boyfriend suddenly dumps her. For no good reason! As far as Mondays go, it doesn’t get much worse than this. And Ellie is positive that if she could just do it all over again, she would get it right. So when she wakes up the next morning to find she’s reliving the exact same day, she knows what she has to do: stop her boyfriend from breaking up with her. But it seems no matter how many do-overs she gets or how hard Ellie tries to repair her relationship, Tristan always seems bent set on ending it. Will Ellie ever figure out how to fix this broken day? Or will she be stuck in this nightmare of a Monday forever? From the author 52 Reasons to Hate My Father and The Unremembered trilogy comes a hilarious and heartwarming story about second (and third and fourth and fifth) chances. Because sometimes it takes a whole week of Mondays to figure out what you really want.

Why Fortune Cookies Hold the Secret of Life

by Jessica Brody

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been strangely obsessed with fortune cookies. Little harbingers

of wisdom and destiny, wrapped up in a delicious crunchy treat, what could be better? And

for a long time, I truly believed fortune cookie fortunes had the power to shape and change

my destiny. Then I turned seven.

But seriously. Fortune cookies are cool right? They’re this cultural staple that we’ve all

come to love and expect. I mean, imagine if you went to eat at a Chinese restaurant and

didn’t get a fortune cookie at the end? You’d probably burn the place down. Okay, maybe

not that.

But I love that there’s this little air of mystery surrounding the fortune cookie custom.

Especially if you think about how many fortune cookies there are in the world at any given

time, and you just happened to get this one. Why this one? What does it all mean? Is

someone or something trying to tell me something? Maybe there’s some kind of cosmic

significance in that. Or maybe I just need to get a life.

When I sat down to plot out the book A WEEK OF MONDAYS, about a girl named Ellie who

has to relive the same horrible Monday every single day, I wanted to include my whimsical

view of fortune cookies somewhere within the story. And since this is a book about destiny

and whether or not we have the power to change it, I felt like it was a perfect pairing. So

when I developed Owen, Ellie’s best friend, I gave him a part-time job bussing tables at a

Chinese restaurant and every Monday morning, he brings Ellie and himself two fortune

cookies and asks her to choose one. It’s their little Monday morning tradition. On this

particular fateful Monday morning Ellie unwraps her cookie and her fortune says:

“Today, you will get everything your true heart desires.”

Yes, I wrote that fortune. And yes there is significance behind the words “true heart.”

So you would think that when Ellie wakes up the next day to find it’s the exact same

Monday that she’d get the exact same fortune, because the day is exactly the same. And

actually, you’d be right. She does get the same fortune on the Second Monday. But on the

Third Monday, her fortune changes. Because that’s the day that Ellie starts to fully embrace

her predicament (being stuck in the same day over and over) and starts to make changes in

her life. Therefore, I felt it only appropriate that her fortune would change from day to day

as Ellie made different choices. So yes, even though Owen works at the same Chinese

restaurant and grabs the same two cookies, the messages inside of those cookies—the

harbingers of wisdom and destiny—do change throughout the story.

Because maybe fortune cookies really are magic…

Okay, enough woo woo. I’ve decided, in honor of this magical fortune cookie post, I would

list out my top ten favorite fortune cookie fortunes of all time (that I actually found on the

internet, since who really remembers their fortunes from cookies they ate seven years

ago?) Who knows if these are real fortunes, but who cares!? They’re funny!

So here we go…

1) The Fortune You Seek…is in another cookie

2) If you think you’re going to sum up your life on this little bit of paper, you’re crazy

3) Only listen to fortune cookies; disregard all other fortune telling units

4) I cannot help you, for I am just a cookie

5) You couldn’t be less interesting. But you’re going to try, aren’t you?

6) Your reality check is about to bounce

7) You will be hungry again in one hour

8) Meh.

9) How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?

10) Help! I’m a prisoner in a fortune cookie factory!

So what about you guys? Do you have any funny or memorable fortunes? Post them in the

comments! And enjoy the book!
