Harper Winter 2016 Tour: The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Harper seriously always has one of the best book catalogs. There is always a HUGE selection of titles and I always want them ALL.

So when I saw the Winter 2016 Catalog, I reacted a little like this…

1

Then Hannah over at Irish Banana put together THIS fantastic blog tour with Stephanie over at Harper and let me be apart of it! Which I’m super excited about ESPECIALLY since I get to help promote Jodi Meadows newest release, THE MIRROR KING.

3

If any of you pay attention to my Twitter you know I’m a huge fan of Jodi’s work, THE MIRROR KING is definitely my favorite of hers so far. I loveeee THE ORPHAN QUEEN, but TMK was crazy intense, and so many twists and turns. I absolutely LOVE it.

Now I’m going to share a little info about the book, Jodi put together a REALLY awesome and hilarious guest post for you guys, and there are two REALLY amazing giveaways being provided by Harper, and Jodi is offering up a THE ORPHAN QUEEN Swag Pack to a lucky winner on this stop! Wilhelmina has a hundred enemies.

HER FRIENDS HAVE TURNED. After her identity is revealed during the Inundation, Princess Wilhelmina is kept prisoner by the Indigo Kingdom, with the Ospreys lost somewhere in the devastated city. When the Ospreys’ leader emerges at the worst possible moment, leaving Wil’s biggest ally on his deathbed, she must become Black Knife to set things right.

HER MAGIC IS UNCONTROLLABLE. Wil’s power is to animate, not to give true life, but in the wraithland she commanded a cloud of wraith mist to save herself, and later ordered it solid. Now there is a living boy made of wraith—destructive and deadly, and willing to do anything for her.

HER HEART IS TORN. Though she’s ready for her crown, declaring herself queen means war. Caught between what she wants and what is right, Wilhelmina realizes the throne might not even matter. Everyone thought the wraith was years off, but already it’s destroying Indigo Kingdom villages. If she can’t protect both kingdoms, soon there won’t be a land to rule.

In this stunning conclusion to THE ORPHAN QUEEN, Jodi Meadows follows Wilhelmina’s breathtaking and brave journey from orphaned criminal on the streets to magic-wielding queen.

When my darling Crystal emailed to ask if I would write something for her stop, of course I said yes. But what to write about? She sent a list of potential topics, two of which were “What if your main characters came to our world?” and “What role would you play in the OQ world?”

I liked both of those ideas a lot. How could I possibly choose which to do?

But why choose? Why. Not. Do. Both?

So, I present to you: If I traded places with Wil and Black Knife for a day

Imagine this:

One day, I’m sitting at my computer, still wearing pajamas, a blanket draped over me. It’s afternoon and the only thing I’ve put in my stomach is coffee. This is basically every day, plus or minus the blanket depending on the weather.

Over in Skyvale, it’s nighttime. Because reasons. Black Knife is fighting crime, like usual. Wilhelmina is committing crime, like usual.

By some twist of fate/book blogger antics, we switch places. Suddenly, Wil and BK (henceforth known as WBK) are me — combined into one absurdly attractive person wearing an awesome black uniform and incredibly well-armed. They are sitting at my computer, staring at the blinking cursor and surrounded by ferrets. They are mystified.

And just as suddenly, I am Wil and BK — both people at once. I’m fighting crime and committing a crime. At the same time. It’s possible I’m trying to stop my own crime. I am mystified.

The rest of the day goes something like this: WBK spend their day learning about their new surroundings (my house). They also raid my fridge, but since they don’t know about the microwave, they eat the frozen burritos still frozen. The guacamole is easier to figure out. Strangely, there are no cookies, because I ate them all before I left, but there is half a pot of coffee. Kippy avoids them.

There’s a brief fight in their head about whether to leave the house, since Skyvale has been replaced by farmland and neither of them are totally sure how to interact with cows. Eventually, they figure out the TV (priorities) and binge watch Daredevil on Netflix. They definitely don’t answer my emails while I’m gone.

And speaking of me being gone.

There’s a serious identity crisis going on in Skyvale, and it’s me. And the other me. I’m staring at my double (does my hair really look like that?) and both of us are wearing pajamas and a blanket. Adorable striped socks, but no shoes. There’s glass on the ground and I/we are sort of freaked out about germs. And oh yeah, being transported into a place on the verge of being destroyed by the toxic byproduct of magic.

Oh yes, I/we know where I/we am/are. And I/we am/are struggling with pronouns and whether to use singular or multiples. I end up going with multiple since there are two of me. And sadly, there’s not much we can do. It’s night, and neither of us are great at running across rooftops or fighting. We do what all writers would: we take ourselves to the nearest cafe (and as the author of this world, I happen to know where Laurence’s Bakery is). We spend the rest of the night hiding under a table, eating comfort carbs and discussing what we will do if this is permanent.

Fortunately, the switch is temporary, and everything goes back to normal after a day or so, but there’s always that lingering worry. . . .

What if it happens again???

I still haven’t read any of Jodi Meadows books! I meant to read Incarnate earlier this year but I never got around to it. This series looks interesting, though!
